Can You Use an Urgent Care Doctor as Your Primary Care Doctor?

Can You Use an Urgent Care Doctor as Your Primary Care Doctor?

by Shearly (SU)
If you have ever called your primary care doctor’s office because your child had an earache or sprained ankle, you know that it can sometimes take days to get an appointment. The simple truth of the matter is that none of us live in a 9-5 world anymore. A sudden fever or sore throat doesn’t check your schedule before showing up. Instead, it usually arrives smack in the middle of a jam-packed day or busy weekend.

Imagine it is a weekend. You are gathered, as a family, in the living room watching a movie. Suddenly, your youngest, who has been a little cranky all day, starts pulling on her ear and saying it hurts. You check her and notice she has a fever. Your doctors’ office is closed and you do not think it is serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room.

Allergy Self Care: Friend or Foe?

If you have allergies, you are probably all too familiar with the symptoms of a runny nose, sneezing, itchy watery eyes or worse. Asthma patients, for instance, can experience severe asthma attacks. And if you have been using over-the-counter (OTC) medications to self-treat your allergies, you are probably also well acquainted with other common complaints such as a feeling of brain fog or marked drowsiness from taking OTC medications, such as Benadryl or diphenhydramine hydrochloride.

When Asthma Strikes

When Asthma Strikes

Asthma attacks can vary in severity and can range from a tense situation into an urgent one, or even a full on emergency. Like any emergency, the first thing to do is to remain calm and assess the situation. If the reason for the asthma attack is obvious, such as a smoky room, try to remove the person having the attack, or if possible, the trigger. Your next course of action will depend on the severity of the attack. Additionally, if there has been a series of attacks in close procession, you may need to seek immediate medical care.

Can You Outgrow Asthma?

Can You Outgrow Asthma?

by Rismary Cabrera
The short answer is no. Children do not “outgrow” their asthma condition. Although a person’s asthma may become better or worse over time, it really has nothing to do with outgrowing it. Lungs do become larger as children progress to adulthood, but both children and adults can and do, suffer from asthma. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be well managed so that symptoms are either mild or virtually disappear altogether.

Chest Pain: A Symptom of Heart Attack and Heartburn

Heart attacks and heartburn can cause very similar symptoms. It is not always possible to tell the difference between the two, leading some to seek urgent care for heartburn or indigestion. It’s always better to be safe than sorry and seek medical attention for chest pain, as even a doctor may not be able to distinguish the cause of your symptoms without further medical testing.
